I Married a Jew

Aug 24 4 Elul Torah Portion. We raised our children in a home that observed all the major Jewish holidays. I made our children aware of their culture and heritage. Our son was bar mitzvahed and attended Hebrew school for five years. His friends were all Jewish as he grew up, and he attended March of the Living. He is the last Jewish male in our family, since my one and only cousin is a female and I am an only child. If he has no Jewish sons, then our family line will die. Now he has a non-Jewish girlfriend and they are getting serious. He has the support of all her friends who are not Jewish.

I remember when, several years ago, the local government of my small hometown proposed renaming the town Christmas tree. Their plan backfired. Many in town saw it as yet another example of the so-called War on Christmas at the hands of us non-Christians. It was clearly a Christmas tree, they said, so why not call it one? And some of us in town who are Jewish and whom, along with other non-Christians, the well-intended gesture was supposed to benefit found ourselves agreeing with them.

They’ve been snatching all the quality Jewish men, and the What do these women know, that these celebrity women are finally catching onto? I’m knowledgeable on the subject and I can appreciate a solid Jewish man when I meet him with hairy men or my dating experiences with furry Jewish guys.

My husband’s father and mother are Jews. My parents are both what Mr. Hitler would be pleased to call ‘Aryan’ Germans. I am an American-born girl, and the first to defend my Americanism in an argument; yet so strong are family ties, and the memory of a happy thirteen-month sojourn in the Vaterland a few years ago, that I frequently find myself trying to see things from the Nazis’ point of view and to find excuses for the things they do—to the dismay of our liberal-minded friends and the hurt confusion of my husband.

Here we are then, Ben and I, a Jew and a German-American, married for four years, supremely happy, with a three-year-old son who has his father’s quick brown eyes and my yellow hair. Ours was a fervent love match, made more fervent by the fact that we had to wait in secret for two years until Ben earned enough at his profession to support a family. He had known other girls and, as I was twenty-five before we married, I had had my share of other men’s attention.

Consequently our marriage was not the hasty, impassioned leap of two people soaring on the Icarian wings of a first love. That which was between us was calm as the night, deep as the sea; in the light of it we both knew that forever afterwards he would look upon other women, and I upon other men, as pale wraiths. We determined that no obstacle should prevent our union, and obstacles there were a-plenty as soon as our families learned our intention.

Married to a Jew, you will be barred from certain circles. They can say what they like about Germany, but democratic America is far from wholeheartedly accepting the Jews.

Other Jewish diaspora languages. Jewish humor is the long tradition of humor in Judaism dating back to the Torah and the Midrash from the ancient Middle East , but generally refers to the more recent stream of verbal and often anecdotal humor of Ashkenazi Jews which took root in the United States over the last hundred years, including in secular Jewish culture.

European Jewish humor in its early form developed in the Jewish community of the Holy Roman Empire , with theological satire becoming a traditional way of clandestinely opposing Christianization. Modern Jewish humor emerged during the nineteenth century among German-speaking Jews of the Haskalah Jewish Enlightenment , matured in the shtetls of the Russian Empire, and then flourished in twentieth-century America, arriving with the millions of Jews who emigrated from Eastern Europe between the s and the early s.

Beginning with vaudeville , and continuing through radio , stand-up comedy , film , and television , a disproportionately high percentage of American, German, and Russian comedians have been Jewish.

May 30, – As a Jewish guy who has only dated shiksas (non-Jewish girls), I have come up with 18 things that she should know before dating a Jewish man.

Recently, I found myself on a date with someone I was sure was Jewish. We were in New York, and he had brown hair and the first name of a biblical hero — what was I supposed to do, ask to see his foreskin? He was not Jewish, as it turned out. And on our date, I learned a lot about Conservative Christian theology and the homeschooling system. But you are polite and from New Jersey, I wanted to say! You are wearing khakis and a button-down!

How dare you deceive me like this! In most other cases, religion is considered an iffy topic for a first date — even if both people on the date are Jews who are both pretty sure they want to live and die without owning a Christmas tree. You, your parents, and your sister all have jobs at Jewish organizations? I guess for me, I just think organized religion is a pathetic exercise in brainwashing.

We both agree that Netanyahu is corrupt but to criticize the Israeli government is not to criticize the existence of Israel, right? We both agree that Israel is the one stronghold of the Jewish people and can do no wrong, right? Do you know any Orthodox Jews?
