Speed dating: Why are women more choosy?

Social bonding is fundamental to human society, and romantic interest involves an important type of bonding. Speed dating research paradigms offer both high external validity and experimental control for studying romantic interest in real-world settings. While previous studies focused on the effect of social and personality factors on romantic interest, the role of non-verbal interaction has been little studied in initial romantic interest, despite being commonly viewed as a crucial factor.

A more classic version of speed dating was used during the Farmer-Chef Connection, an educational event that seeks to foster better relationships between chefs.

While speed dating has its origins as a networking technique to connect singles, it has only more recently made its way into the academy. Since universities world-wide have begun to adopt speed dating protocols as a tool for building research culture. An extensive review of the brief history of speed dating in university settings indicates that the motivation for organising events tends to fall into six clusters.

Each motivation is discussed here, as well as two potential as-yet-unexplored outcomes for research students in academe: increasing wellbeing through improving social relations and aiding the conceptualising of theses. Finally the authors raise the need for further research in this area to establish its real impact and to identify best practices. Speed dating, as the name suggests, originated in romance. Time-poor Jewish singles used a round robin brief face-to-face format to meet potential in-group partners.

Cambridge scientists have come up with a new way of facilitating collaborations between academics at conferences — by treating them like genes. When they were funded by the Royal Society to run a small satellite conference on cell polarity, the researchers were determined to break the ice between scientists who did not know each other, and to encourage the big names to mix with the up and coming.

The forty delegates were asked to submit information in advance both about their own research interests and about the specialist areas that they wanted to know more about.

A group of neuroscientists has organised a virtual conference incorporating an ‘online dating‘ system. With academic conferences cancelled worldwide due to the Covid pandemic, the international research community is finding alternative ways of getting together to present their work, exchange ideas, and make new connections with like-minded people in their area. This week, Dr Dan Goodman and colleagues from the University of Pennsylvania will be hosting neuromatch — a free, web-based “unconference” for neuroscientists.

As well as online presentations from invited speakers, the event includes a computer-assisted online-networking element, adapted from the mind-matching sessions that are a recent feature of the Cognitive Computational Neuroscience CCN conference. A really important part is meeting new people and starting new collaborations. The mind-matching system uses abstracts of submitted research papers, and applies machine learning algorithms, to automatically match participants for a series of minute one-to-one chats — which Dan describes as a bit like academic speed-dating.

This lets it suggest new meetings between people who do not already know each other, but really should, based on their research interest. He was very impressed with the real-life version at CCN. For example, I discovered two people who were doing very similar projects to me — but none of us knew each other. With an eye to the future and the climate emergency, the group is keen to reduce the environmental impact of academic conferences. Having estimated that delegates would have travelled a total of around 3 million kilometres to just one conference last year, they had already planned to hold an online networking event later this summer.

We have all been to those conferences where you only talk with the person who you are sitting next to during the conference dinner, or with a few researchers during the session breaks.

To prevent this from happening, we are organizing a speed dating session. Speed dating allows participants to shortly talk with many fellow researchers in an informal way about what drives them in doing their research. More about this in format. Format Even though the setting aims to be informal, there is a structure behind the speed dating. The organizer will ring a bell when participants are expected to move to the next speed date.

The time per date will depend on the number of participants who will join the session. Afterwards, we plan to organize an informal drinks and bites event where people can follow-up with the ones they had interesting talks with. Joining the follow-up event will be at your own expenses. Any conference participant who likes to better know the interests of other conference participants, and see whether they share similar interests, are very welcome to join.

Rationale: Even though conferences are considered to be good events for networking, they are often organized in ways that prevent you from meeting and talking with a wide variety of different people.
